the public spaces - the city - a stage of 360°
Theatre in public spaces uses the public space as its stage – whether we like it or not, it is always part of the production. Every public space is a stage waiting to happen! Theatre in these areas connects uniquely to the life there, intertwining itself into city, creating a human connection and turning an everyday place into a special performance platform. “Through the work of these urban artists, the public space becomes a potential location for artistic connection and a shared collective room.” (Anne Gonon)
Street theatre is the stumbling block on the street that opens your eyes and makes you see where you are. Because of this, it is innovative, progressive and contemporary. It plays within the sphere of societies and has the ability to connect directly with the people living there; to integrate their stories and their histories.
The street stage allows for artistic creations that could never fit into a theatre. Characteristic for the genre is therefore the use of pyrotechnic, giant objects or site-specific productions. The great outdoors explodes the borders of our imagination so that shows can be played forty metre above ground or along the sides of buildings. Because of this freedom, artists choose again and again to produce for outdoors. The artist in the public space is a medium that listens to the place in which he or she performs.
